    Our holiday adventures

Lara: We went on holiday. We drove for a long time to get there.

Rhea: And when we arrived there were people everywhere.

Lara: We caught lots of buses. Sometimes that wasn’t fun because I wanted to get out of the pram. I said ‘up’ but mum and dad didn’t get me up.

Rhea: They didn’t get me up either.

Lara: We went to the beach. We ran around and mum and dad chased us. We jumped up and down in the waves, wearing our swimmers and swimming nappies. That was fun.

Rhea: But I didn’t like it when they took us in the water and we couldn’t touch the bottom with our feet. That wasn’t fun.

Lara: I didn’t like that either. And when I was running on the beach a lady came and looked at me and held my hand and she tried to pick me up but mum didn’t give me to her. I would have cried if mum had let her hold me. I didn’t know her and I couldn’t understand what she said.

Rhea: We went to an art gallery with mum and dad but it was different to the ones we usually go to. There were lots of people there too. We looked at some of the pictures.

Lara: I liked the toys there. I liked the big goat the best, I wanted to climb on it.

Rhea: After that we met up with some bigger children and their mum. They shared their ball with us and we all ran around on the grass. The biggest one cut her hand on some glass and her mum put some sticky on it. My mum said her mum was very organised because she had sticky with her.

Lara: We did lots of climbing on our holiday. We climbed the big staircase in our hotel. We climbed them up and we climbed them down. We climbed the stairs in aunty Kay and Toni’s house too. We climbed them and I held Kay’s hand. I don’t usually hold people’s hand when I don’t know them but I did then. I didn’t want to sit on her knee for a photo though. I didn’t know her well enough for that.

Rhea: I like climbing too. But I had more fun running around. We didn’t have any highchairs on our holiday so when I wasn’t sitting on mum or dad’s knee, I was running around. I ran around the pool at breakfast. Mum and dad chased us and said we should be careful of the water.

Lara: You ran around at the little Japanese restaurant too.

Rhea: So did you. We both ran up and down and mum and dad chased us and said to be careful not to run out the door because of the street and the cars. They didn’t seem very happy when we ran there.

Lara: Mum said to dad that there were buses out there and that she was feeling nervous. I don’t know what ‘nervous’ means.

Rhea: I don’t either. Anyway those were the most fun things we did on our holiday. It was also interesting looking at the little coat hook in its bag while we were on the boat. The coat hooks were a present from Toni for us, from somewhere a long way away.

Lara: We also had fun hiding behind the sheet at Kay and Toni’s didn’t we? We played that for ages.

Rhea: Yes, I forgot about that, but that was very fun. And after I had looked at the coat hook I liked running around on the boat. Mum and dad didn’t seem very happy when we were running there either.

Lara: No they didn’t did they.

Rhea: Anyway, we did lots of running and climbing and exploring on our holiday.

Lara: I gave you lots of kisses this morning before we drove home. Did you like that?

    Rhea: Yes, that was nice.

    Lara: I liked it too.

Rhea: We had a good holiday. But I’m happy to be home.

After extensive travel for short periods both inside Australia and overseas, I took a break from my health policy job to travel for two months in Spain, Portugal and Morocco and live for four months in France, three of those in Paris. I'm currently living back in Australia with Steve and our twins Rhea and Lara.
